As a man thinks, so is he. 〜The champion attitude〜

Do you know a man by the name Israel Adesanya? 

He’s the current UFC Middleweight Champion.

イスラエル・アデサンヤという人物をご存知だろうか。

彼は、現在のUFCミドルウェイト級チャンピオンである。

Few days ago, I had an opportunity to watch his interview on Youtube. It has inspired me so much to the extent I made up my mind to share my learning on this platform. Hope you will be inspired as well, just as I was.

数日前、彼のインタビュー動画を視聴する機会があった。それは、私に感動を与え、こうしてこのプラットフォームにその学びをシェアするに至っている。この記事の読者の皆さんの心に残るメッセージがあればと思う。

“Everything starts here”.

Pointing to his head, Adesanya said with great confidence. He is talking about the power of the mind- how our thoughts and imagination can impact our destiny. 

「全ては頭の中から始まるんだよ」。

自身に満ちた顔で、アデサンヤは語り始めた。彼の言う「頭の中」とは、マインドの力を指している。それは、私たちの考えや想像力が私たちの将来行く先にインパクトを与えるのである。

As my former article (‘Thinking the Opposite’) has dealt with, who you are today is the consequence of your own thinking. For a while, I’d been wondering why Adesanya is so dominant in his games which allows him to possess an undefeated record of 20 wins and no losses. When we look at him, you may see that he is so skinny. I thought like “where on earth does his strength come from”?

以前の記事（「逆境から光を見出そう」）では、今日のあなたがあなた自身の考えの結果であることについて扱った。何故、アデサンヤが20戦無敗の強さを誇っているのかについて、私はしばらくの間考えていた。何故ならば、彼はとても痩身であるからだ。「どこに彼の強みがあるのだろうか」と私は思った。

Now I know the answer: He got a different mentality. His thinking manifests all he is. The Bible says this (of which has by now become my favorite scripture):

インタビューを視聴し終えた今、私はアデサンヤの強さの秘訣を知った。彼は、特殊なメンタリティを持っているのだ。彼の考え方が彼の強さに現れている。このことを説明すべく、以下私の好きな聖書の言葉を引用してみたい:

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior—one who manipulates]. He says to you, “Eat and drink,” Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost].

Proverbs 23:7

その人の心の中の考えが、その人の本当の姿である。彼はあなたに「食え、飲め」と言うけれども、その心はあなたに真実でない（心のなかで勘定している）。

The heart reflects one’s character.

I love how he enters the ring- he is dancing before his opponents! It’s like a lion declaring to everyone that he is the king of the jungle. Attitude is a pivotal trait of a champion. By it, we know that person is extraordinary. 

心は、その人の人間性を反映している。

私は、彼がリングに入場する時に踊っている姿を見て、カッコイイなと思ったと同時に、その姿に一種の感銘を受けた。それは、ライオンがジャングルの帝王であることを宣言しているかの様であった。態度とは、王者の最も重要な特徴であると思う。これによって、アデサンヤが並外れた人間であることを理解することが出来る。

Let us once again review what attitude is:

Our choices as to how to behave, react or respond to something.

ここで、態度とは何であるかをもう一度見てみよう:

どの様に物事を捉えるかのチョイスのこと。

As Adesanya continued in his interview, he said something really important. 

“As you get sick if you don’t look after your physical health, the same applies to mental health. You got to look after your mental health as well”. 

アデサンヤはインタビューの中でとても心に残る言葉を残した。

体の健康管理を怠れば病気になるのと同じく、精神的健康も気をつけないと病気になってしまう。体と心はしっかりと面倒を見ないといけない。

Hearing him speak this way, I felt his statement is totally rational. We are responsible for taking care of our hearts indeed. The Bible teaches us,

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

彼がこの様に語るのを聞いて、それがとても理にかなっている様に私は思った。私たちは、自分たちの心の状態に対して責任がある。聖書は言う、

何を守るよりも、自分の心を守れ。 そこに命の源がある。

箴言 4:23

If we neglect to be alert concerning the condition of our hearts, the consequence may be painful. “Out of our hearts come the issues of life”. As I saw Adesanya talk, I learned it is crucial for us to watch over our hearts regularly.

心の状態の管理について怠惰であると、痛い目を見ることになる。「心に、命の泉がある」。アデサンヤが語るのを聞き、私たちが常に心を守ることが大事であることを学んだ。

Speaking of thoughts and imagination, Adesanya’s character taught me that what we can create in our minds is unlimited. He said in the interview that we can visualize what we want. Moreover, this champion added on to say that character can be ‘switched’.

考え方と想像力について、アデサンヤの性格は自分たちが心の中で生み出せることは無限であることを教えてくれた。私たちは望むことを視覚化することが出来る。更に、彼は自分自身のキャラクターは切り替えることが出来る、と語った。

I interpreted this as the fact there is time (occasion) for everything in this life. Time to declare victory before our enemies. Time to be alone, talking to ourselves. Time to refresh- indulging ourselves in our hobbies.

このことを、私は人生において全てのことに時があると解釈をした。勝利宣言するに時があり、独りになるに時があり、そして気分転換するに時がある。

Walt Disney once said:

If you can dream it, you can do it.

ウォルト・ディズニーはかつてこう言った:

夢見ることができれば、それは実現できる。

I think he is absolutely right. 

In this part of visualizing what is in our hearts, God helps us with allowing our thoughts and imagination to come to pass. The Bible says,

Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen. 

Ephesians 3:20-21

彼の言ったことは正しいと私は思う。

夢を叶える旅路の中で、神様は私たちの思考や想像していることが実現するのを助けて下さる。こう書いてある、

どうか、わたしたちのうちに働く力によって、わたしたちが求めまた思うところのいっさいを、はるかに越えてかなえて下さることができるかたに、 教会により、また、キリスト・イエスによって、栄光が世々限りなくあるように、アァメン。

エペソ人への手紙 3:20-21

God has created us in His own image and likeness. In this wonderful craftwork by His hands, we are destined to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and have dominions on this earth. You can see the evidence from the first book of the Bible:

Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.” So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subjugate it [putting it under your power]; and rule over (dominate) the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.” 

Genesis 1:26-28

私たちは神様のかたちに、神様にかたどったデザインされてつくられている。このデザインのもと、私たちには数を増やし、地を満たし、この地を治めるというプログラムが組み込まれているのだ。

神はまた言われた、「われわれのかたちに、われわれにかたどって人を造り、これに海の魚と、空の鳥と、家畜と、地のすべての獣と、地のすべての這うものとを治めさせよう」。 神は自分のかたちに人を創造された。すなわち、神のかたちに創造し、男と女とに創造された。 神は彼らを祝福して言われた、「生めよ、ふえよ、地に満ちよ、地を従わせよ。また海の魚と、空の鳥と、地に動くすべての生き物とを治めよ」。

創世記 1:26-28

This Creator, who breathed us in, is able to do in and through us something beyond our measure. That’s why it is extremely important to activate our creativity in thoughts and imagination, because of how powerfully and skillfully we are created!

私たちを創造された方は、私たちの考えの限度を超えたことを、私たちを通じて成し遂げることが出来る。故に、私たちそれぞれに与えられている創造力を考え方や視覚化するなかでフルに活かすことが大事なのである。私たちはかなりの高性能なつくりになっているのだから。

Finally, I would like to refer to how Adesanya talks about his family. 

In his fame, he still honors his parents. It inspired me the statue of him recognizing who raised him up even if he is too famous now. In this aspect, I admire this fighter. I ask myself, “how many famous people can pay tribute to there parents”?

最後に、アデサンヤがどの様に彼の家族について語るのかに注目してみた。

名声を得てもなお、彼は自身の両親を敬うことを忘れない。彼を育てた親に今―　超有名人になってもなお感謝をしているのは尊敬に値するだろう。その点で、私は彼が素晴らしい人間性を持っていると思っている。私は自分に問うた、「有名になってもなお両親に感謝できる人がどれだけいるだろうか」と。

We must honor and respect our parents all the days of our lives, even after their death.

両親を敬うことを私たちは忘れてはならない。それは、両親が死んだ後も、変わることはない。

Honor [esteem, value as precious] your father and your mother [and be respectful to them]—this is the first commandment with a promise— so that it may be well with you, and that you may have a long life on the earth.

Ephesians 6:2-3

「あなたの父と母とを敬え」。これが第一の戒めであって、次の約束がそれについている、 「そうすれば、あなたは幸福になり、地上でながく生きながらえるであろう」。

For the reader’s understanding, let me summerise four lessons we can learn from Israel Adesanya:

1. A person is a reflection of his or her thinking. You are what you think you are.
2. We must be vigilant in keeping (the condition of) our hearts. Otherwise, there are possibilities of disaster!
3. We are to make use of our unlimited thoughts and imagination. As Disney puts this way, we can do whatever we can dream of.
4. Our responsibility is to honor and respect our parents. This comes with promises- things go well with us and we will have a long life.

以下、イスラエル・アデサンヤから学べる4つのことをまとめた。

1. 人は、その人が考えたとおりの人間になる。
2. 私たちは、心の状態を注視せなばならない。さもないと、痛い目にあう可能性が。
3. 無限にある考えと想像力を駆使しよう。ディズニーが残した言葉にある通り、私たちは夢見ることが出来るのならば、それはいずれ実現することが出来る。
4. 私たちの役割は、両親を敬うこと。これには幸せになること、そして長生きすることの2つの約束が伴う。

I think we can learn many practical lessons from professionals. Let us keep learning and improving our lives.
