“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:4–7
Yesterday was my friend’s wedding.
These two wonderful people met at my church, and I have come to see them not simply as friends, but as my brother and sister.
It was my first time fully participating in a wedding ceremony, and through that experience, I found myself thinking deeply about love.
Love Suffers Long
What particularly caught my attention during the pastor’s message was this simple statement:
“Love suffers long.”
Perhaps I have not yet fully experienced what it means to be patient for the sake of love.
But as I listened, I felt as though I were looking at myself in a mirror.
The pastor compared marriage to a journey.
Even after seventeen years of marriage, he said that he was still discovering new things and continuing to learn.
That made me realize something:
We continue learning and growing throughout our lives.
Can I Still Love?
I began to think about love beyond marriage.
Throughout my life, I will meet many different kinds of people.
Some will encourage me; others may disappoint me. Some will be easy to love, while others may be difficult for me to understand.
So I asked myself:
“Can I still love my fellow human beings?”
I realized that love must become a standard for my life, while also recognizing that I am still growing.
I still have much to learn about what it means to bear, believe, hope, and endure.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:7
God Loved Us First
There is one thing I can say without shame:
No one can love us better than God.
The Christian message is not that we first became worthy of God’s love.
Rather, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
When I face my own weaknesses, I often think about the love of God.
People can change. Seasons change. Circumstances change.
Today someone may feel differently from yesterday. Winter eventually gives way to spring. Even markets rise and fall.
But God remains the same.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Hebrews 13:8
When I really think about that, sometimes my only reaction is:
“Wow.”
It humbles me.
God knows our weaknesses, yet His mercy and love remain greater than we can fully understand.
We love Him because He first loved us.
1 John 4:19
Love Is a Journey
Perhaps love is something we continue learning throughout our lives.
To be patient.
To forgive.
To hope.
To endure.
And sometimes, to continue loving even when doing so is not easy.
I am still learning.
But if God has loved me first, then I want to continue learning how to give that love to others.
Love suffers long.
Maybe understanding those three words is a journey in itself.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Brother Vijay and Sister Dushanthi once again.
It was amazing to witness how God brought the two of you together.
Congratulations on your marriage!
