The story titled ‘David and Goliath may be very famous across the globe. In this article, we are going to discover the keys to living a victorious life.
I hope we can be excited as we explore strategies for how to defeat our adversaries.
「ダビデとゴリアテ」は、聖書の中で最も多くの人に知られている話の一つでは無いだろうか。この記事では、私達が勝ち続ける人生を送る鍵🔑の発見を試みたい。
私達の前に立ちはだかる敵を打ち負かす戦略に目を向け、それによって気合を入れることが出来れば幸いだ。
We are going to see two significant aspects of David the victor- persistence (resistance) and exercising the mouth.
それでは、勝者・ダビデの特筆すべき側面を見てゆこう。それは2つあって、①粘り強さ（反抗力）②言葉の力を用いること である。
Before we get into the observation of David, let us not regard this chapter of the Bible as an ‘old story. Look, here’s the thing: Goliath represents our challenges, obstacles, and distractions towards our final destination in life.
There is no victory without the battle, no victor without opponents.
ダビデの特徴を見てゆく前に、「聖書は古い本である」という先入観を取り除いてみて欲しい。ゴリアテという人物は確かに巨人であるが、彼は私達が人生において直面する試練、障壁、目標に対する気を散らすものを象徴している。
戦い無き所に勝利は無く、敵無き所に勝者は居ないと私は思う。
When we start pursuing our dreams, the more we pursue and advance in the process, the more likely the enemy shows up. Your doing well attracts them so that they may hinder you. Concerning your advance, your enemies are not happy at all!
私達が夢を追いかけ始める時、目標に向かって一心に走れば走る程、そしてより進めば進む程、敵が現れる様だ。あなたがよくやっている、という事実は、敵を惹き付け、ヤツらはあなたの目標達成を必死になって阻んで来やがる。あなたの成功について、ヤツらは全く満足していないのだ！
With this being stated, let us break down what is written of David.
それでは、ダビデについて書かれていることを見てゆこう。
And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”
(1 Samuel 17:4,9-10)
時に、ペリシテびとの陣から、ガテのゴリアテという名の、戦いをいどむ者が出てきた。身のたけは六キュビト半。 もしその人が戦ってわたしを殺すことができたら、われわれはおまえたちの家来となる。しかしわたしが勝ってその人を殺したら、おまえたちは、われわれの家来になって仕えなければならない」。 またこのペリシテびとは言った、「わたしは、きょうイスラエルの戦列にいどむ。ひとりを出して、わたしと戦わせよ」。

Here, we get to have a ‘profile’ of the opponent that David a shepherd boy was to face. “A champion” is what is first used to describe Goliath. It doesn’t end there.
We are given more details- his height which is six cubits and a span. This measure is not familiar to our generation, so I calculated them into metres to find out that this giant was 2.894 metres.

ここにおいて、私達読者は羊飼いの男の子であるダビデが直面することとなる「ヤツ」のプロフィールを読むことに。その「戦いをいどむ者」はゴリアテについての説明で一番最初に出て来るものである。
その後、私達は更に詳細を得る。「ヤツ」の身長は六キュビト半。この単位はあまり見慣れないので、それをメートルに直してみた所、ゴリアテは2.894メートルであることが分かった。

This extraordinary guy literally challenges the armies of Israel. Defy means asking someone to do something that you think is impossible.
If this is so, Goliath was looking down on the people of Israel and convinced of his victory when the battle has not yet begun.
巨人ゴリアテはイスラエルの戦列に戦いを挑む。英語版聖書に書いている、defy と云う単語は「誰かに自分が無理だろうと思うことを（半強制的に）お願いする」という意味を持っている。
そうであるのならば、ゴリアテはイスラエルの人々を見下した上に、戦いが始まる前から自分自身の勝利を確信していたことになる。
This attitude of a single enemy terrifies the whole army of Isreal. Let’s see how terrified they became.
この「デカいヤツ」のおかげで、イスラエルの戦列は皆腰を抜かしてしまった。以下にその記述がある。
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
(1 Samuel 17:11)
サウルとイスラエルのすべての人は、ペリシテびとのこの言葉を聞いて驚き、ひじょうに恐れた。

It must be rare for people to become greatly afraid, not simply afraid.
Now, as David the shepherd boy comes into the scene, let us take a look at the difference in perspectives between him and other people.
人々が、ただ恐れるのでは無く、非常に恐れる、というのは稀なことでは無いだろうか。
ここからは、ダビデが登場するシーンに入るのだけれども、彼と他の人のモノゴトの捉え方の違いに注目してみよう。
“Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.” Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
(1 Samuel 17:25-26)

This is my observation, though, people must have been out of their minds. When we are confused because of fear, we are prone to report what our eyes behold. No wonder they reported among themselves how terrified Goliath made them become.
イスラエルの人々は気が変になっていたに違いない、と私は見た。恐れ故に混乱する時、私達は自分達の目が見たことそのものを他の人に「報告する」傾向にあるのではないだろうか。イスラエル人達がゴリアテが自分達をどれだけ恐れさせたかを語り出したのも無理は無い。
Pay close attention to David’s view- there is no fear seen in his eyes but he thinks about how to shut the giant up. Moreover, David is not seeing what his opponent is seeing, that is, the armies of Israel. Instead, he is seeing spiritual hosts, the armies of the living God!
ダビデの見方に注目。彼の目下に恐れは全く無く、むしろどうやって巨人を黙らせるかを考えている。それに留まらず、ダビデは敵が見ているもの（イスラエル軍）では無く、生ける神の軍という全く別のものを見ているでは無いか！
Let us stop here for a moment to write down some key points.
The first key is how we see it; I refer to this as one of the victor mentalities David possessed.
ここで、キーポイントをまとめてみよう。
1番目は、私達の物事の見方である。これは、ダビデが持っていた勝者のメンタリティであると私は捉えている。
As we can see, David is obviously not minding what Goliath says which can be perceived as a harsh provocation to his people. While his adversary sees physical warriors, David sees spiritual warriors, referring to his people’s armies of the living God.
挑発とも受け取れるゴリアテの言葉を、ダビデは気にも留めていない様に見える。敵が目に見える軍隊を見ているのに対し、ダビデは目では見えない霊的な軍隊を見、彼の人々イスラエル人を生ける神の軍としている。
From here we learn a lesson: when we are exposed on a battlefield, we don’t agree with what our foes are speaking against us. How should we be according to the evil imagination they have against us? What they speak out must not come to pass! We must counter them with our mouths- keeping quiet is a dangerous option.
ここから私達は「人生をかけた戦において、私達は敵が語ることに対して同意しない」と云うことを学ぶ。敵が口から発する、邪悪な言葉通りに私達がなることは断じてあってはならない。その言葉は、成就してはならない。私達にとって結果的に不利益であるからだ。であるので、私達は口をもって反撃を試みることが求められる。沈黙を守ると云うことは危険なチョイスである。
Interestingly, when we stand on our creeds, that attitude makes some people around us mad. The common group of people that stand before us is our family.
面白いことに、私達が自分達の信条に堅く立つ時、その態度は一部の人間を激高させる。その一部の人間の「あるある」は、私達の家族である。
Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?”
(1 Samuel17:28-29)
長兄エリアブは、ダビデが兵と話しているのを聞き、ダビデに腹を立てて言った。「何をしにここへ来たのか。荒れ野にいるあの少しばかりの羊を、誰に任せてきたのか。お前の思い上がりと野心はわたしが知っている。お前がやって来たのは、戦いを見るためだろう。」 ダビデは言った。「わたしが、今、何をしたというのですか。話をしているだけではありませんか。」

David’s own brother was angry. David being brave somehow provoked his anger. He wants David to stay in his comfort zone, being afraid just like his people. See the language he uses, saying David is proud and his heart is insolent. The funny thing is that does not stop young David. Despite what he has been told, he even talks back to his elder brother！
ダビデの実の兄（エリアブ）はブチ切れた。ダビデの勇敢さが彼をイライラさせたのだろう。
エリアブは、ダビデが他の人々同様にゴリアテを恐れ、コンフォート・ゾーン（ストレスや不安が無く、限りなく落ち着いた精神状態でいられる場所）に留まっていることを期待していた。それは彼がダビデに対して用いた言葉を見ればよく分かるだろう（思い上がり、野心）。このシーンでのハイライトはダビデがそれらの言葉に食い下がらない所だ。自分が伝えられているネガティブな言葉にも関わらず、ダビデは兄ちゃんに言い返す。
Lesson from this scene. In the area of fighting the battle for our lives, stubbornness is not a bad character at all. Without it, David would have given up his fight before he faces Goliath or one.
ここからは、「頑固さ」というものが人生の戦いにおいて重要な役割を果たす、ということを学ぶことが出来る。それがもし無ければ、ダビデはゴリアテとの一騎打ちを諦めていただろう。
After this, please pay attention to the result that the words of David bring.
続いて、ダビデの放つ言葉の結果を見てみよう。
Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him. Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
(1 Samuel 17:31-33, 36-37)
人々はダビデの語った言葉を聞いて、それをサウルに告げたので、サウルは彼を呼び寄せた。 ダビデはサウルに言った、「だれも彼のゆえに気を落してはなりません。しもべが行ってあのペリシテびとと戦いましょう」。 サウルはダビデに言った、「行って、あのペリシテびとと戦うことはできない。あなたは年少だが、彼は若い時からの軍人だからです」。 しもべはすでに、ししと、くまを殺しました。この割礼なきペリシテびとも、生ける神の軍をいどんだのですから、あの獣の一頭のようになるでしょう」。 ダビデはまた言った、「ししのつめ、くまのつめからわたしを救い出された主は、またわたしを、このペリシテびとの手から救い出されるでしょう」。サウルはダビデに言った、「行きなさい。どうぞ主があなたと共におられるように」。

Seeing the way David speaks, even the king tries to discourage him saying “Come on, a young boy”. The king says to David negative words like “You can’t” and “The enemy is far mightier than you, what on earth are you talking about”?
ダビデの語るのを見て、王でさえも彼を思いとどまらせようとしている。「あんちゃん、やめとけって」と。それ以外にも、「君には無理だ」や「相手は君より遥かに強いのに、滅茶苦茶を言うでない」といった否定的な言葉をサウル王がダビデに投げかけている。
The amazing thing is that David never backs off. He seems more encouraged after the counter.
We can see a fire burning within him from the way he speaks.
ここでもまた、ダビデは引き下がらない。彼の心の中に燃えたぎる炎は、より強くなっている様にも見える。
The banger is David’s prophecy. Here, he calls things that do not yet exist as if they do. Simply, by stating what God has done in the past in his life, he is invoking Him into the scene. With this, the king has nothing to say because he is convinced of David’s confidence.
極めつけはダビデの預言である。ここで、この少年はまだ起こっていないことをさも起こったかの様に呼び起こしている。神が彼の人生においてしたことを述べることにより、ゴリアテとの戦いの場に神を召喚しているのだ！これをもって、王は論破されてしまった。彼はダビデの自信がガチであることを悟ったからである。
Note here. Words are powerful. It can change others’ minds.
Let’s see what happened between David and king Saul.
ここで注目すべきは、言葉の強さである。それは、他人の心を変えることが出来る。
ダビデとサウル王の間に起こったことを詳しく見てみよう。
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.
Proverbs 18:21
死も生も舌の力に支配される。 舌を愛する者はその実りを食らう。
箴言18:21 より
Tongue leads in the way we are to go- life or death. If we exercise them well, we bear fruits. If we mess with them, the consequence is painful.
舌という小さな体の器官は、私達の行く先（生死）を左右する力を持っている。それを上手く用いるのであれば、実を結ぶことになる。それをナメて掛かると、結果はイタいものになる。
Below is what took place in the scene of king Saul being convinced:
The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it whichever way He wishes.
Proverbs 21:1
以下は、サウル王がダビデに「GOサイン」を出した時に起こったことである:
王の心は、主の手のうちにあって、 水の流れのようだ、 主はみこころのままにこれを導かれる。
箴言 21:1 より
To our curiosity, the heart of a king does not belong to himself but to the hand of God. It’s amazingly interesting how the king’s heart is moved- according to how God wants it.
王の心はその王自身では無く、神の御手の内にある。王の心が如何にして動くかが興味をそそる。それは神の思うとおりに動くからだ。
In this case, because of the invocation of His presence out of the lips of David and how God always does things, Saul’s heart was changed from objecting to David’s bravery into supporting his courage.
このケースにおいては、ダビデが口を用いて神をその場に召喚したことにより、そして、神の道が常に変わらないために、サウルはダビデの勇敢さを応援するに至ったのであった。
Finally, let us see how the battle goes. If we take note of how David talks back to the giant, we the readers become very interested.
最後になるが、戦いの結末をご覧頂こう。ダビデが巨人ゴリアテに言い返す所がカッコ良い。
And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. So the Philistine said to David, “ Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord ’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
(1 Samuel 17:42-47)
ペリシテびとは見まわしてダビデを見、これを侮った。まだ若くて血色がよく、姿が美しかったからである。 ペリシテびとはダビデに言った、「つえを持って、向かってくるが、わたしは犬なのか」。ペリシテびとは、また神々の名によってダビデをのろった。 ペリシテびとはダビデに言った、「さあ、向かってこい。おまえの肉を、空の鳥、野の獣のえじきにしてくれよう」。 ダビデはペリシテびとに言った、「おまえはつるぎと、やりと、投げやりを持って、わたしに向かってくるが、わたしは万軍の主の名、すなわち、おまえがいどんだ、イスラエルの軍の神の名によって、おまえに立ち向かう。 きょう、主は、おまえをわたしの手にわたされるであろう。わたしは、おまえを撃って、首をはね、ペリシテびとの軍勢の死かばねを、きょう、空の鳥、地の野獣のえじきにし、イスラエルに、神がおられることを全地に知らせよう。 またこの全会衆も、主は救を施すのに、つるぎとやりを用いられないことを知るであろう。この戦いは主の戦いであって、主がわれわれの手におまえたちを渡されるからである」。

Goliath starts spiritual warfare through so-called ‘trash talk’. He goes on even cursing David by his gods. He prophesies wickedly how David is going to be. Immediately David counters the statement made against him. He invokes the presence of God and declares how the battle will end up with (Prophecy). In fact, he has won the fight at this point, for he has already seen an end.
ゴリアテはまず霊的戦（いくさ）をダビデに仕掛ける。それは英語でtrash talk (相手に対して、挑発した言葉を投げかけること) と呼ばれるものである。更に、ゴリアテは彼の信じる神々の名によって少年ダビデを呪う。とっさにダビデは彼について語られたことに反撃する。彼は神をその場に召喚し、戦いがいかにして終わるのかを預言する。実際には、彼はこの時点で戦いに勝利している。彼が既に結末を信仰によって見ているからである。
Here is an important part again.
When we fight warfare, it starts from our mouths. Not only that, whether we win or not is determined by the usage of our mouths. The strategy is talking about what we see to come. Although the enemy tried to defeat David by speaking nonsense to him, David talked back and won the victory. When our enemies provoke us with demonic words, we are supposed to talk back to them and revoke all the evil coming out of their mouths.
ここにもミソが詰まっている。
私達の戦いは口から始まるものである。それのみならず、勝敗は口によって決まる。私達が持つべき戦略は、来たるべきことを見据えることだ。敵はたわごとを以てダビデを負かすことを試みる。しかしながら、それは失敗に終わり、ダビデが勝利を収める。
私達の敵が邪悪な言葉を用いて挑発して来る時、私達は本来ならば言い返し、口から出てくる邪悪な言葉を取り消さねばならないと思う。
The battle is settled.
Let’s see the outcome of what David spoke.
戦いはここに終結した。
ダビデが語った言葉がいかに効果のあるものであったかを見てみよう。
”Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.
(1 Samuel 17:49-50)
ダビデは袋に手を入れて小石を取り出すと、石投げ紐を使って飛ばし、ペリシテ人の額を撃った。石はペリシテ人の額に食い込み、彼はうつ伏せに倒れた。 ダビデは石投げ紐と石一つでこのペリシテ人に勝ち、彼を撃ち殺した。ダビデの手には剣もなかった。
サムエル記上 17:49-50 より
The battle was over within the blinking of our eyes. David defeated the giant with a stone he slung. This reminds us of God’s ways are higher than our ways, as dealt with in the previous article.
戦いは一瞬にして決着が付いた。ダビデは、目に見える形では彼が投げた石のみで巨人を打ち負かしてしまった。これは、前回の記事でも取り上げたが、神の道（方法）が私達人間の道と違うことを思い起こさせるものである。
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9
This way, David defeated the giant with a sling and a stone only！
わたしの思いは、あなたたちの思いと異なり わたしの道はあなたたちの道と異なると 主は言われる。 天が地を高く超えているように わたしの道は、あなたたちの道を わたしの思いは あなたたちの思いを、高く超えている。
イザヤ書 55:8-9 より
こうしてダビデは巨人を剣なしで打ち破ることとなった。
Again, we are learning a lesson from David. His prevailing over his enemy, not with a sword teaches us that some means to fight battles in our lives are not wholly what people think they may be.
ダビデから学ぶことは本当に沢山ある。彼がゴリアテを倒したシーンからは、私達の人生の戦いを戦うにあって、その戦い方であったり武器が常識にそぐうものであるとは限らない、ということを学ぶことが出来る。
Sometimes, we may need flexibility in handling what we are facing. It can be the case that what our family members, teachers, and friends are saying is not what God has in storage for us.
時に、直面していることを扱うのに、融通をきかせることが大切かも知れない。もしかしたら、家族が言っていること、先生が言っていること、そして友達が言っていることは、神が私達の為に準備していることと異なるかも知れない。
In the end, this is the conclusion.
We conquer our opponents by resistance and speaking out (consistent declaration). The Bible says,
So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.
James 4:7
A man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; He will be satisfied with the consequence of his words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. Proverbs 18:20-21
少々長くなってしまったが、最後に結論を述べたい。
私達は敵を「頑固な抵抗」と「言葉（継続的宣言）」によって征服することが可能である。聖書によると、
そういうわけだから、神に従いなさい。そして、悪魔に立ちむかいなさい（反抗しなさい）。そうすれば、彼はあなたがたから逃げ去るであろう。
ヤコブの手紙 4:7 より
人は口の結ぶ実によって腹を満たし 唇のもたらすものによって飽き足りる。 死も生も舌の力に支配される。 舌を愛する者はその実りを食らう。

Let us start winning from this day.
Change can be started from this hour.
今日から、勝ち続ける人生をキックオフしよう。

Keep resisting your enemies and talking against them- it will make a way for you.
敵に屈してはならない。敵の言うことに同意してはならない、むしろ言い返してやれば良い。
