Diligence, Consistency, and Unity

My favourite pastime is strolling in nature. It does not only make me feel relaxed but teach me some lessons. Ants were my lecturers today- they taught me about diligence, consistency, and unity.

　時間が空いたときの私の楽しみは、自然の中を散歩することだ。それは、私がリラックスするのを促進するのみならず、時として私に何か大切なことを教えてくれる。今日の講師はアリ（蟻）であった。アリ先生からの本日の講義の内容は、「勤勉さ・首尾一貫性・団結が成功にもたらす影響」であった。

We are apt to take our environment (that is, nature) for granted. It is when we begin to take a close look and pay attention to it, that we find ourselves being taught by it.

　私達は、どうも自分達の暮らす自然という環境を当たり前と思いがちだ。パラダイムシフトをして、自然を観察し耳を澄ます時、それは私達の先生になる。メモ必須の素晴らしい授業が始まるのである。

There is something so fascinating about ants. Do you see what it is? They are very focused and committed. I’ve never seen ants taking a nap. Instead, they are always busy working!

　アリさんに、私は魅力を感じてやまない。この小さな生き物は、とんでも無い集中力を持っていて、その1匹1匹が献身的なのだ。昼寝をしているアリを見たことが無い。とても働き者なのである。

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.

Proverbs 6:6-8

なまけ者よ、ありのところへ行き、 そのすることを見て、知恵を得よ。 ありは、かしらなく、つかさなく、王もないが、 夏のうちに食物をそなえ、 刈入れの時に、かてを集める。

As I walked in a park near my house, I was marvelled looking at ants after ants. They are simply restless. No wonder they are compared to a lazy person. The way ants behave taught me that being diligent and consistent in what one is doing are keys to lead a successful life.

　自宅付近の公園を散歩していた私の視線は、アリに釘付けになった。アリたちは、休むことを知らないかの様だった。なまけ者と比較されるのも無理は無いだろう。まず、アリの勤勉さとその継続力は私を驚かせ、それが私達人間にとっての成功の鍵でもあることを気付かせてくれたのだった。

The greatness of these tiny ants continues. It’s hard for us to find a captain among them- they all look the same! Yet they are somewhat united, and continually gathering foods for their houses. Sometimes, they are carrying objects or insects like spiders and grasshoppers, which are by far bigger than their size! Wow! How can they manage to do such exploits? I observed and found out that the key rests in their unity (teamwork).

　アリの凄さは、まだ続く。キャプテン格のアリがいるという訳でも無いのに（全てのアリは皆同じように見えてしまう）、アリさんはまとまっている。餌を淡々と集め続けている。時にこのアリという生き物は、自分達よりも大きな物や生き物（クモやバッタなど）を捕まえて、巣まで運んでいるのだ。私は、もともと目が丸いが、更に目を丸くしてしまう光景だ。小さなアリさんは、どこからそんな力を得ているのだろうか？私は観察し、アリの結束力（チームワーク）が並外れていることを発見した。

打ち合わせもしないのに 二人の者が共に行くだろうか。

We become stronger when two or three of us are agreed at one point. Ants show us a good example. Although they are very small in size, they can capture bigger insects when their numbers are many. How do they do that? They are on an agreement over one task: to arrest insects (no matter the size) or take foods back home.

　私達は、まとまって合意した時、強くなる。アリは正にその良い例である。アリはとても小さな生き物ではあるが、自分達よりもはるかに大きな餌を捕まえることが出来る。数が多いからだ。しかもそのアリ集団は獲物を捉える、ないしは餌となる食物を巣に運ぶべく一つになっているのだ。

The point is this: we can do great things if we are united. When people are agreed, they can do mighty things. I tell you, three tiny agreed men can bind a giant. To bring back my observation in the context of diligence and consistency, to achieve something big in your life, you have to make the vision agreed with your heart. Only after then comes your attitude of diligence and consistency. Once a solid goal is set, the heart does whatever it takes to conform to the ideal reality (that can be your dream). Thus in the process of achieving your targets, diligence, consistency, and unity play a major role!

　私は、アリから団結することの力を教えてもらった。私達人間は、心を一つにする時、とんでもないことを成し遂げることが出来るのだ。実際、心を一つにした3人の小人（こびと）は、巨人を縛りあげ、打ち負かすことが出来る。勤勉さと継続力に話を戻すと、人生で偉業をなすには、ビジョンを持ち、私達の心とそのビジョンとの間に合意形成が成されなければならない。その後に初めて勤勉さと継続力を掻き立てる意欲が湧いてくるものであると、私は思う。はっきりとした実現目標が定まった時、心は現実を少しでも理想の現実（夢）に近づけるために稼働し始める。であるから、夢を叶えてゆく中で勤勉さ・継続力・団結力（心を一つにすること）の３つは大きな働きをするのである。

Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

ひとりよりもふたりが良い。 共に労苦すれば、その報いは良い。 倒れれば、ひとりがその友を助け起こす。 倒れても起こしてくれる友のない人は不幸だ。 更に、ふたりで寝れば暖かいが ひとりでどうして暖まれようか。 ひとりが攻められれば、ふたりでこれに対する。 三つよりの糸は切れにくい。

伝道の書 4:9-12

In a previous article, I wrote that not everybody is our friends. Today’s finding added more understanding to true friendship. Your true friend is somebody who can agree with you. For how can you walk with someone who doesn’t agree with you while you don’t agree with the person either? It is like pouring oil into water- no meaning!

　以前の記事で、全ての人が私達の友達ではないことを書いた。今日の発見は、真の友達というトピックについての私の理解を深めることとなった。真の友とは、心を通い合わせることの出来る人間である。互いに同調出来ないでいて、どうして歩むことができようか。水と油だ。それらを放って置いても、腐って異臭を放つだけだ。それは、「イシュー」（issue=問題）である。

Ant is a neat insect. It can become our teacher. It confirms that what is widely said: “practice makes perfect”. Its lifestyle makes us grasp one thing about life- to achieve something one has to be determined and committed.

　アリは驚くべき生き物だ。私達の先生として「継続は力なり」ということを教えてくれる。その生き様は、「決心」と（目標達成に対する）「献身的姿勢」がこの人生を生きる上で大切だということを背中で物語っていた。

Diligence, consistency, and unity are the keys to success. Take a look at ants!

勤勉さ、継続力、そして心のユニティーは成功の鍵であるに違いない。

アリを見よ。これは一理「あり」だ。

Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, BELIEVE that you receive them, and you will have them.
