Mount Fuji -富士山を山だけで済ませて良いのか-

富士山は、ご存知の人もいる通り、日本で最大の山である（標高3,776メートル）。

この山の魅力は、「日本一」ということだけに留まらない。

太宰文学から、富士山の凄さに迫ってみた。

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan (3,776 metres, above sea level).

This article traces the greatness of this mountain, from a novel by a well-known Japanese writer Dazai Osamu.

高等学校「国語総合」の教科書に富嶽百景という太宰治の単編小説がある。

実は、以前センター試験の模試を受けた際に、現代文において特に小説文に弱いことが明らかになり、以来読解力の向上に努めている。その一環として文章を読んで、感想を「アウトプットする」ということを始めた。果たして、これは正確に読むことの訓練になっているのか…と冷やかす自分もいるが、作業自体は楽しいのでやっている。

今日はバイトの休憩時間中（2時間30分）にこれを読み、感想をB4サイズのルーズリーフに綴ってみた。

As I prepare myself for entrance exams for university, I am focusing on training myself in fast and accurate reading. Recently, I have started reading a story and write down what I have learned. A voice within me says “this is not even helpful”. Nevertheless, I do not care about the voice because reading and writing down my comments are a lot of fun.
Today, I used the break hour at work (two hours and thirty minutes) to read a story and write down my thoughts.

ここでは、私の心に浮かんだことを書いてゆきたい。

Here, I will share what came into my mind as I read this masterpiece by Dazai Osamu.

富士山のカッコイイ所は、本文中において「人」として「象徴」の2つの印象を主人公に与えてしまう点だ。山は、自然という大きな絵の一部に過ぎないと私は思っていたが、筆者は「水の精みたいな姿で立っている」とあたかも人間であるかの様な表現をしている。そこに、他の山にはない親近感があるのだろう。日本には「ふじの山」という童謡があるし、それだけ人々の心の中に富士山が大切なものとして浸透しているに違いない。

一方、自然に親しみを感じるということからは、その人は孤独なのではないだろうか、という発想も出来る。文章中には、主人公が途方に暮れ、酒浸りになるとも書いてあることから、私は、そういった心細さの中で見る富士山が心に染みたのではないか、と分析した。

What is awesome about Mount Fuji, according to the story, is the point that it gives two significant impressions to the main character- as a person and as a symbol. Before reading this novel, I used to think of the mountain as only a part of a big painting- nature. Dazai personalizes the mountain depicting “… (it is) standing like an elf of water”. 

Maybe, Mount Fuji is a friendly mountain for Japanese people. In Japan, we have a children’s song about this mountain. It must be evident that Mount Fuji is more than just a landscape.

Well, I also thought the way Mount Fuji attracts people is because of their loneliness. In this story, the scene appears that the main character is depressed and ends up getting drunk. I analysed that the Mount Fuji seen by a depressed person is, paradoxically, exceedingly touching.

続いて、富士山の「象徴」という点について詳説を試みたい。

太宰のこの小説が教えてくれたのは、富士という山が「アイコン」になるケースもある、ということだった。本小説の中から挙例するとなると、主人公（太宰治）がお見合いをするシーンが頭に浮かぶ。甲府がその場所であるのだが、その「娘さん」に対し主人公が「結婚したい」と決心した裏側には、富士山の写真があったのだ。その写真の美しさは、目の前にいる女性と重なるものがあったのだろう。

富士山の荘厳さはには心を揺さぶる何かがきっとあったはずだ。

I would like to describe Mount Fuji as a symbol.

What this writing by Dazai taught me is that this Japanese mountain can be an icon for somebody. In the story, there is a scene that the main character (this is actually Dazai himself) meets a young lady whom he is to marry. Behind the scene of Dazai having decided to marry her is because of the beauty of Mount Fuji. Where the two met together, there was a picture of Mount Fuji. It mixes its beauty and that of the young lady. 

From this, I felt the solemnity of Mount Fuji has the power to make us think something deep.

まとめになるが、富士山はただの山ではなく、様々な顔を持つ。「人」として人間に親しみやすさを感じさせたかと思えば、「シンボル」として人の心を動かす。

ここから私は、どんな物事にも「顔」があり、それは様々であるので必ず二面性であるとは限らないのである、ということを学んだ。

To sum up, Mount Fuji has so many ‘faces’. It can become friendly to people by pretending to be like a person, on the other hand, it also plays a role as a symbol, moving the heart of many.

色んなアングルから物事を見るのは楽しい以上に、生きてゆく中で凄く大切になる態度であると思った。

Viewing things from different points of view is something worth doing. More than that, I believe this will be more important from now on.
