Language and Mentality 言語と精神

Japanese is such an interesting language. To know why it is so, you would like to learn about the Japanese mentality, which creates the obscurity of the language.

日本語は勉強すると中々面白い言語だ。その背景には、日本人の考え方が深く関係していた。

In the course of Japanese Language studies, I came across a short essay written by a Japenese sociolinguist Dr Takao Suzuki.

現代文の勉強をする中で、「相手依存の自己規定」（鈴木孝夫）という随筆に出くわした。著者は社会言語学者で、一人称「私」の使われ方が日本語と英語でどれだけ違うかが論述されていた。

According to the essay, the ambiguity of the Japanese language has a connection with people’s mentality.

鈴木氏によると、日本語の曖昧さと日本人のマインドには繋がりがあるのだとか。

Here is an example.

Say, there is a primary school teacher. That person is 40 years of age and has a family. At school, he explains himself as “Sensei” (meaning ‘teacher’) to his students. At home, on the other hand, he calls himself “To-san” which means “your daddy”. Here comes the complexity of Japanese: both Sensei and To-san signify the personal pronoun, ‘me’!

ここで一例を紹介してみたい。

例えば、一人の小学校教諭（男性）がいたとする。その人は４０歳で、妻子持ちである。学校で、担任をしているクラスでは自分（一人称「わたし」）を「先生」と呼ぶ一方で、家では子どもたちの前なので「父さん」と名乗る。ここに日本語の複雑さがあると私は思わずにはいられない。「先生」「父さん」はどちらも文法的には一人称「私」にあたるのだ！

The personal pronoun in Japanese is rather confusing. Because it changes depending on who a person is speaking to. This is not seen in English grammar- we can always use ‘I’, no matter whom we talk to.

日本語の一人称代名詞は「誰に話しているか」によって変わる、という特異性を持つ。英語だと「私（’ I ‘）」という概念がすごくハッキリしているので、誰に話すにしても、Iという一人称は決して変わることが無い。日本語の様に、場合によって「俺」や「おにいさん」とならないのが英語なのだ。

I contemplated about the background. The factor is, in my view, the tendency of Japanese people considering “others first”.

日本人は、「他人を優先させる」傾向が見られ、それが日本語にも影響しているのでは無いかなと私は考え始めた。

When it comes to boldly say “I am handsome”, a typical Japanese man cares about what others may react. Imagine you are on the elevator with two or three strangers and get off on the same floor. Nobody will be the first to get off saying “after you, please”.

誰かが大胆に「私はイケメンです」と言うとする。この場合、典型的な日本人は他人の目を気にする（注：三浦の勝手な解釈です）。

デパートのエレベーターで、数人の知らない人達と同じ階で降りる場合、多くの場合誰も一番最初に降りようとしない。「お先にどうぞ」と互いに譲り合うのだ。

それで誰も降りないまま下の階にエレベーターが行ってしまったらギャグだが（笑）

Ways of describing “I” in the Japanese language can be very various.

日本語には、沢山の「私」にあたる表現が存在するのだ。

I might research more regarding the relationship between the language and the people’s thinking. 

言語と人の考え方の関係については、もっと調べてみようと思った。
