Freedom 自由

“It is cloudy today, but in our hearts, it is a clear day today”. What my best friend said in prayers touched me. That made me think about what freedom is.

「今日は曇っていますが、私達の心の中は晴れ模様です」。私の親友が祈りの中で何気なく言った言葉が心を打った。まさか、それが私に、今回の本題である自由について考えさせるとは思ってもみなかった。

Japan, the country that I live in is such a blessed country. As a citizen of this wonderful country, I have never struggled to eat foods three times a day. I have never been persecuted pertaining to my rights, especially what I believe in.

Because of that, it seems somewhat hard to grasp what it is like to fight for freedom as Nelson Mandela did.

私が住む日本という国は非常に恵まれた国だ。一国民として、一日三食に困ったことは無い。自分の権利について、とくに信仰のことで迫害を受けたことは無い。

これらのこともあって、私は、ネルソン・マンデラ氏の様に自由のために闘った人と自分を中々関連付けられずにいた。

What is freedom? I don’t usually think about it- for I have never experienced my freedom being threatened.

So, picking up a pocket dictionary in my hands, I searched for the definition of freedom. There was a good illustration.

“The state of not being affected by something that makes you worried, unhappy, afraid etc”.

(Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 5th Edition)

From this, I began to perceive freedom has a strong connection with our hearts.

自由とはまず何なのか？普段、あまり考える機会の無いトピックではないだろうか。というのも、「自由が危機に晒（さら）される」という経験をしたことの無い私には、中々曖昧なのがこの自由、という単語なのだ。

であるのでまずは辞書で意味を引いてみた。すると、しっくり来る説明があった。

不安、不満、恐れなどに影響を受けない状態のこと。

どうやら、私達の心と自由は強い繋がりがありそうだ。

There are references to freedom in the Bible. 

‘So if the Son sets you free, you will be FREE indeed. ‘

(John 8:36)

聖書にも自由についての記述が幾つか見られる。

‘だから、もし子があなたがたに自由を得させるならば、あなたがたは、ほんとうに自由な者となるのである。‘

(ヨハネによる福音書 8:36)

It is not that we fight for it or pursue it; Jesus is the author of our freedom. This verse gave me the idea that Jesus has the authority to set us free.

自由とは、私達が闘ったり求めるというものではなくて、イエスが自由の筆者なのである。この箇所は、イエスこそ、私達を自由にする権威があるということを私に教えてくれた。

As I read through scriptures, I became more convinced that freedom is a mindset.

‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. ‘

(Romans 8:1-2)

聖書を読み進めてゆくと、自由というものがマインドセットである、ということを私は確信するようになっていった。

‘こういうわけで、今やキリスト・イエスにある者は罪に定められることがない。 なぜなら、キリスト・イエスにあるいのちの御霊の法則は、罪と死との法則からあなたを解放したからである。‘

(ローマ人への手紙 8:1-2)

Nobody who accepts Christ as personal Lord and Savior shall be condemned. It can be said that genuine freedom is through Christ.

キリストを（救い）主として受け入れる人は、罪に定められない。本当の意味での自由は、この、キリストによるものなのだ。

My understanding is that freedom is already established by Jesus Christ. It is up to us whether to accept (believe in) Him or to reject (not to believe in) Him. He has already eradicated whatever which hinders us to be free; He shed His precious blood and died for us.

私のこれまでの理解は、自由というものがイエス・キリストによって成就されたということだ。キリストを受け入れる（信じる）／受け入れない（信じない）というのは私達の選択によるものだろう。それでも、このキリストが、私達の自由を阻んでいたものを全て根絶するべく、無実ながらも血を流して私達の為に死んだ（そして、蘇った）、ということを私は信じている。

私はこのキリストを通して私達人間が神様の赦しを得ている、ということを、良き知らせ（福音＝ゴスペル）として多くの人に伝えてゆきたい。

I now believe that real freedom in that we may understand and believe Christ as our Master.

Freedom is in Christ Jesus, and He is our freedom. 

本当の自由とは、キリストが私達の先生であることを知ることでは無いだろうか。

自由とはキリストであって、キリストこそが私達の自由である。
