ジェフリー・オリエマ Geoffrey Oryema

ブルキナファソに住んでいる知人に、私が血を引いているウガンダ共和国について話したら、「Geofferey Oryemaの国ね」という答えが返ってきて、正直戸惑いました（この人が誰だか、聞いたこともなかったので）。

When I was talking about Uganda (My second nation) to a friend of mine in Burkina Faso, he replied “Oh, that’s Geoffrey Oryema’s country, right” ? I was confused to that answer, actually. Who is Mr. Oryema ? I dind’t know.

調べてみると、彼は国際的に名の知れたウガンダ出身のミュージシャンでした。そんなこの人は、壮絶なものです。

Looking up on the internet, he is a well-known Ugandan musician. The sublimity of his early life is above our imagination.

In 1977, at the age of 24 and at the height of Idi Amin’s power, Oryema was smuggled across the Ugandan border in the trunk of a car, after the murder of his father, Erinayo Wilson Oryema, who was a cabinet minister in the government of Amin, beginning a life in exile.

今日は彼の「マカンボ」(1990年リリース) という曲を聞き、不思議にもメロディーの中に吸い込まれる感覚がありました。紛争をやめようよという彼の悲痛なメッセージがひしひしと伝わってきました。

Today I listened to one of his songs- Makambo (1991). The melody had something which absorbs myself to take attention to it. That contained a profound message, in which him implying ‘stop the war’.

落ち着いた曲調の中に、ずっしりと思い意味が込められていました。ハッキリとは分からないのですが、メロディーのなかに何か感じさせるものがあります。

There’s a deep meaning in soothing melody. I don’t totally understand the lyrics, though, it was appealing to my heart.
